The client wanted a large garden space without completely leveling the pleasing rise of the land. Rather than flattening out what was there, EARTHWORK founder Mark Riffel believed that a great garden could make us of the elevation changes.

To create a garden space worthy of the impressive brick country house, EARTHWORK set about constructing terraced garden plots. These allow the flower beds to rise in a step pattern,
not only a wonder to see but also a way to minimize impact on the land. A brick patio that reached from the backdoor to the walkway through the garden also needed to bridge the two
spaces while serving as a comforting space.

The outcome is a grand, rising garden with architectural detail and the invitation to walk through the painterly collection of flowers. The entire project creates a narrative as it unfolds from the front of the house. The raised beds that begin at the front door hint to something on their way behind the home, and as they wrap around, they expand into a magnificent vision.

The most important part of building the garden was keeping the experience of the homeowner front and center. The patio allows you to luxuriate in the reds, pinks, and whites of the roses.

The planters bring the garden in a little closer, almost joining you at the table. And the water feature whispers in your ear. Meanwhile, the walkway takes your hand, leading through the
space for a more intimate encounter.
